Montana Labor Commissioner Sarah Swanson Elected to National Workforce Leadership Position
HELENA, Mont. - Montana Department of Labor and Industry Commissioner Sarah Swanson has been elected chair-elect of the National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA), elevating Montana’s voice in national conversations about jobs, workforce development, and the future of work.
“It is an honor to be elected to this national leadership role by fellow workforce leaders,” Swanson said. “Montana is emerging as a national leader in building an employer-informed workforce development framework that brings together education, training, economic development and industry. I look forward to sharing Montana’s experience, learning from other states, and working with colleagues across the country to advance practical solutions that help people prepare for good jobs and help businesses find the talent they need.”
NASWA is a national organization that brings together workforce agencies from every state, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories to advance effective employment, training, unemployment insurance, and labor-market programs.
As NASWA Chair-elect, Swanson will help guide the NASWA Board’s work to support workforce systems, strengthen collaboration among states, and advance opportunities for workers, job seekers and employers nationwide. Swanson joins colleagues from Missouri, Ohio, Massachusetts, and Washington to form the Executive Committee of the Board.
“Montana is leading from the front – from creating a robust education-to-workforce pipeline, reducing unemployment insurance fraud, or tearing down barriers to work through occupational licensing reform, Montana is dedicated to better serving employers, job seekers, and taxpayers,” said Swanson. “This opportunity to tell our story on a national stage is really special, and I am grateful for the support of my colleagues from around the country.”
Swanson has helped advance Governor Gianforte’s 406 JOBS initiative to modernize Montana’s workforce system and expand pathways to good jobs. Her collaboration with workforce leaders nationwide will bring new ideas and approaches to help Montana meet employers’ talent needs and connect more Montanans with opportunity.
Swanson assumed the chair-elect role Sept. 17 during NASWA’s Annual Membership Meeting at the 2026 NASWA SUMMIT. The position is part of NASWA’s five-member executive committee and prepares her to serve as chair during the following association year.
NASWA represents workforce agencies in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and three U.S. territories.
